Three of my English Conversation students created this video documentary for their first semester final exam project at Hsing Wu University. Their names were Kevin Chen, Henry Chen, and Jason. Rather than simply memorizing and repeating vocabulary words for multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blanks tests, my students learn by doing, which is the natural way to learn. At the same time, they learn how to manage projects and gain an understanding of the world and gain useful knowledge from it. By discovering things for themselves, they can become their own best teachers.

Four of my English Conversation students at Hsing Wu University created this video for their first semester final exam project. The students are Cindy Hong, Cid Huang, Hua Chen, and Una Chang. They were required to create a documentary video at least 15 minutes long, with at least 5 minutes of conversation. It's cooperative learning and project-based learning; that is, they help each other to learn by doing. As opposed to the memorize-regurgitate-and-forget form of "studying for multiple choice and fill-in-the-blanks tests, this is a natural form of learning, and lessons in vocabulary and project building are not soon forgotten.

I required them to create a documentary video at least 15 minutes long with at least five minutes of English dialogue spoken by the students themselves. The project involved several other requirements. English is their second language. Rather than have them memorize and repeat vocabulary words, my exams are project oriented, and they learn the vocabulary by having to use it naturally. The three students who created this video were Jessie, Judy, and Jessica in my Monday morning English Conversation class.

Hegel and Marx - Bryan Magee Series of The Great Philosophers

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (August 27, 1770 -- November 14, 1831) a German philosopher and a major figure in German Idealism. His historicist and idealist account of reality revolutionized European philosophy and was an important precursor to Continental philosophy and Marxism. Hegel developed a comprehensive philosophical framework, or "system", of Absolute idealism to account in an integrated and developmental way for the relation of mind and nature, the subject and object of knowledge, psychology, the state, history, art, religion, and philosophy. In particular, he developed the concept that mind or spirit manifested itself in a set of contradictions and oppositions that it ultimately integrated and united, without eliminating either pole or reducing one to the other. Examples of such contradictions include those between nature and freedom, and between immanence and transcendence. By the time of Hegel's death, he was the most prominent philosopher in Germany. His views were widely taught, and his students were highly regarded. His followers soon divided into right-wing and left-wing Hegelians. Theologically and politically the right-wing Hegelians offered a conservative interpretation of his work. They emphasized the compatibility between Hegel's philosophy and Christianity. Politically, they were orthodox. The left-wing Hegelians eventually moved to an atheistic position. In politics, many of them became revolutionaries. This historically important left-wing group included Ludwig Feuerbach, Bruno Bauer, Friedrich Engels, and Marx. They were often referred to as the Young Hegelians. Marx's view of history, which came to be called historical materialism, is certainly influenced by Hegel's claim that reality and history should be viewed dialectically. Hegel believed that the direction of human history is characterized in the movement from the fragmentary toward the complete and the real (which was also a movement towards greater and greater rationality). Sometimes, Hegel explained, this progressive unfolding of the Absolute involves gradual, evolutionary accretion but at other times requires discontinuous, revolutionary leaps, episodal upheavals against the existing status quo. For example, Hegel strongly opposed slavery in the United States during his lifetime, and he envisioned a time when Christian nations would radically eliminate it from their civilization. Bryan Magee Series of The Great Philosophers. In 1978, Magee presented for BBC television 15 dialogues with noted philosophers in a series called Men of Ideas. Following an "Introduction to Philosophy" presented by Magee in discussion with Isaiah Berlin, Magee discussed topics like Marxist philosophy, the Frankfurt School, and modern Existentialism in subsequent episodes. Transcripts of the dialogues within the Men of Ideas series are available in published form in the book, Talking Philosophy. Another BBC television series, The Great Philosophers, followed in 1987. In this series, Magee discussed the major historical figures of Western philosophy with fifteen contemporary philosophers. The series covered the philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, and Descartes, among others, ending with a discussion with John Searle on the philosophy of Wittgenstein. Transcripts of The Great Philosophers are available in published form in a book of the same name. The Story of Thought (also published as The Story of Philosophy) also covers the history of Western philosophy.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz & Baruch Spinoza

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (July 1, 1646 -- November 14, 1716) Leibniz a German Mathematician, Philosopher, Engineer, Astronomer, Diplomat and an Eminent Grand Master. He is considered as the most rationalist philosopher and one of the great sages of the modern world, one of the greatest renaissance men of Western thought and philosophy. He has made momentous contributions in several fields including mathematics, physics, logic, ethics, law, politics and theology. A list of his significant contributions is almost as long as the list of his endless accomplishments, his visionary Law of Continuity and The Transcendental Law of Homogeneity (TLH) only found clear mathematical implementation in the 20th century. This tells us a great deal why Leibniz wasn't well understood in his early days, and how much ahead of his time he was. As an engineer Leibniz worked on calculating machines, clocks and mining equipment. He also refined the binary number system, which is the foundation of all digital computers and digital technologies of the modern day. In that we can say that Leibniz is the Godfather of the new digital age. In 1671, Leibniz invented a calculating machine which was a major advance in mechanical calculating. The Leibnizian calculator incorporated a new mechanical feature which is a cylinder bearing nine teeth of different lengths which increase in equal amounts around the drum. This concept invention was the spark of all other inventions in the calculating system machinery field. As a mathematician, he not only created a revolutionary work in what is now called topology, but came up with the calculus independently of Newton, and his notation has become the standard which is in use today. As a Philosopher, Leibniz was mostly noted for his optimism and being one of the greatest champions of reason and rationalism. Leibniz concluded that our Universe is the best possible one that a Universal Mind or God could have created. Baruch Spinoza (24 November 1632 -- 21 February 1677) The breadth and importance of Spinoza's work was not fully realized until years after his death. By laying the groundwork for the 18th century Enlightenment and modern biblical criticism, including modern conceptions of the self and, arguably, the universe, he came to be considered one of the great rationalists of 17th-century philosophy. His magnum opus, the posthumous Ethics, in which he opposed Descartes's mind--body dualism, has earned him recognition as one of Western philosophy's most important thinkers. In the Ethics, "Spinoza wrote the last indisputable Latin masterpiece, and one in which the refined conceptions of medieval philosophy are finally turned against themselves and destroyed entirely." Philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel said of all contemporary philosophers, "You are either a Spinozist or not a philosopher at all." Bryan Magee Series of The Great Philosophers. Following an "Introduction to Philosophy" presented by Magee in discussion with Isaiah Berlin, Magee discussed topics like Marxist philosophy, the Frankfurt School, and modern Existentialism in subsequent episodes. Transcripts of the dialogues within the Men of Ideas series are available in published form in the book, Talking Philosophy. Another BBC television series, The Great Philosophers, followed in 1987. In this series, Magee discussed the major historical figures of Western philosophy with fifteen contemporary philosophers. The series covered the philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, and Descartes, among others, ending with a discussion with John Searle on the philosophy of Wittgenstein. Transcripts of The Great Philosophers are available in published form in a book of the same name. The Story of Thought (also published as The Story of Philosophy) also covers the history of Western philosophy.

The thesis was published in 1996 under the title L'Avenir de Hegel, plasticité, temporalité, dialectique (The Future of Hegel: Plasticity, Temporality, and Dialectic). Catherine Malabou has taught at Nanterre University in Paris, the University of California at Berkeley, the New School for Social Research in New York City and currently is a full-time professor at the Centre for Modern European Philosophy of Kingston in the United Kingdom. She also teaches an intensive summer seminar at the European Graduate School (EGS). Catherine Malabou is a specialist of contemporary French and German philosophy, with a focus on Hegel and Heidegger. She is most famous for her concept of ontological "plasticity." Her work also incorporates neuroscience and neuro-psychoanalysis. Malabou has published many works including Voyager avec Jacques Derrida - La Contre-allée (1999, English publication in 2004 entitled Counterpath), Que faire de notre cerveau? (2004, English publication in 2008 entitled What Should We Do with Our Brain?), La Plasticité au soir de l'écriture : Dialectique, destruction, deconstruction (2005, English publication in 2009 entitled Plasticity at the Dusk of Writing: Dialectic, Destruction, Deconstruction), Changer de différence (2009, English publication in 2011 entitled Changing differences). More recently, Catherine Malabou published a book in French with Judith Butler entitled Sois mon corps (2010). She also manages a philosophy book series for the French publisher Éditions Léo Scheer.
